Kelp is a species of Seaweed collected from the North Sea and North Atlantic called Ascophyllum Nodosum. It is an awesome tool in an organic gardeners arsenal in that it provides so many benefits. To start with, because it comes from the sea, it covers all the minerals on the periodic table, over 60 trace elements that your plants need for a fully nutritional diet. It also stimulates root development and encourages plants to grow more extensive root systems and also helps to build greater resistance to nematodes, disease and pests, by helping the plant boost it’s own natural defences. Many growers also swear by Kelp when germinating seeds, as it helps young plants get established much quicker. Of course, one of the reasons why Living Soil works is the life within it, and Kelp also promotes the growth of soil bacteria.
Due to the fact that the plants will be fully nourished, you will see increases plants stem strength and plants will deal with stresses of drought, high temperatures, and frost much easier. The added minerals also means improved nutritional value of fruits and vegetables, as well as maximisation of aroma and flavour.
Kelp also contains Cytokinins to help drive cell division and speed up growth, Indoles for faster root development, Auxins and Gibberellins for assisting the mobility of essential nutrients.
It is used in our Soil for life at 1 cup per bag and then recommended to be top dressed every few weeks to maintain the beneficial inputs it provides. It is also used as a botanical tea for foliar feeding or soil drench and is the go-to for any nutrient deficiencies you may see.
Basically, it’s essential and every organic grower should have on hand at all times!
